Unit 2 Assignment 1: Preview Reflection Blog Post: When is Breaking the Law Justified?

The main purposes of the government in my opinion are providing military defense, security ion our homes, economic security, education, and health care. Sometimes it is a little difficult for the government to take care of these needs but they are fundamental in our every day lives. We have a social contract with the government and if our government does not meet our needs then we have a right to speak out as stated in the Constitution. I am not sure whether or not I would be willing to join a Revolution if the government was not meeting the government’s purpose. I guess it would really have to depend on the situation. I do think sometimes the public always says we need, we need, and we need. Sometimes we forget that it is not as simple as us needing something and for it to be given to us. Health care and education is a big topic right now. As much as I believe that those are the most important things right now, I also know that it is not an easy task to take care of. There are millions of people without health insurance and due to the economic crisis, it may be getting worse. One of my friends who work in the local hospital was actually saying that they were actually talking about cutting employee's hours, and as a result she would lose her health insurance since she would not be working full-time. A lot of places require you to work full-time in order to be eligible for health insurance. I don't think a revolution would be the best way to fix our problems, but instead create more conflict.

Assignment 7: Primary Source Document Reflection

Benjamin Wadsworth, A Well-Ordered Family(Boston, 1712). About the duties of husbands and wives
This piece of writing explains a lot about how women and men had different roles. It also talked about how each one had to compliment the other. The men were the head of the household and as such should be obeyed by his wife. But, it also explains that this does not mean he should treat her like his servant. It says that he should treat her with a lot of affection, love, and kindness. It says that God put the man in charge of his wife, and therefore the woman was put there to obey him but also with kindness and affection. When I read this, I was thinking what a perfect life he portrays it to be. I do not believe all men treated their wives with this kind of respect and love that he talks about. How can there be respect among them, if one must obey the other. I think men abused this theory that God put women here to obey them. Women were not treated like "all" people. We did not have the same rights as them and I don't think that is respect. In our lives today, women can vote and we fought for that right. Women are not seen as a lesser person and we have many rights that we did not have back then. Most women now work and go to college and that's something we were not allowed before. I think we have certainly come a long way and women now are much more independent.

Assignment 1: Should I Stay or Should I Go?

I think one of the main reasons why people emigrate from their countries to the United States is for economic reasons. My family was one of those families searching for the “American Dream”. The lives of people in countries with no economic stability are sometimes very poor to the point where they do not have the very basic needs like clean water. They want to improve their quality of life and want their children to be well-educated so they can have a better future. They sometimes do leave family behind and that is the hardest part, but sometimes to improve something some sacrifices have to be made. If I were to decide to emigrate from any country, it would have to be for both economic or freedom reasons. I think both are very important because if I am not free and I can’t enjoy the fact that I have more economic stability and then there really isn’t any point to being more stable. Now on the other hand, if I had freedom and no economic stability, then I would not be able to enjoy my freedom. I think both go hand in hand.
